The extensive use of antimicrobials in human and veterinary medicine in recent years has accelerated the emergence and spread ... resistant microorganisms. This situation has been worsened by the lack of investment in developing new effective antibiotics. The severity of the consequences is clear to see: it is estimated that each year, drug-resistant infections result in at least 25 000 patient deaths and cost the EU EUR 1,5 billion in healthcare costs and through loss of productivity more
This technical report presents the epidemiology of human and animal leishmaniases in the EU and its neighbouring countries and concludes that ... disease remains widespread and underreported in many countries of southern Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle East and that there is a need to improve leishmaniasis prevention and control based on robust surveillance in humans, animals, and vectors, and to increase public awareness following a one health approach. more

The aim of this handbook is to provide network members and other laboratories involved in the diagnosis ... tuberculosis, with an agreed list of key diagnostic methods and their protocols in various areas of TB diagnosis, ranging from microbiological diagnosis of active TB to the diagnosis of latent TB infection. This handbook offers a single source of reference by compiling all methods, with a strong focus on standard (reference) and evidence-based methods. In so doing, it will also contribute to the improvement of disease surveillance data for Europe. more
Health is routinely considered in strategic environmental assessment (‎SEA)‎ and environmental impact assessment (‎EIA)‎, following requirements of European ... directives and the Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment to the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (‎Espoo Convention)‎. Policy-makers and other sources report that these assessments mostly adopt a biophysical perspective and that few cases consider or define health in a manner which is consistent with the WHO Constitution, by considering the wider social, economic, behavioural and institutional aspects of health. This systematically conducted review of over 333 SEA and EIA cases in the WHO European Region shows that while about 80% of assessments pursue a narrow, biophysical interpretation of health, around 10% consider wider determinants when defining health, and another 10% consider wider determinants of health in the actual assessment. Twelve case studies are presented, literature is reviewed and implications for practice are considered. more

Improving Prison Conditions by Strengthening the Monitoring of HIV, HCV, TB and Harm Reduction (Spain)

Mapping Report - Catalonia (Spain).
This threat assessment addresses the implications of the ongoing Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak in Rwanda for ... European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA). MVD is a severe disease in humans and, although uncommon, it has the potential to cause epidemics with significant case fatality. All recorded MVD outbreaks to date have originated in Africa. MVD is not an airborne disease and is considered not to be contagious before symptoms appear. Direct contact with the blood and other body fluids of infected people and animals or indirect contact with contaminated surfaces and materials like clothing, bedding and medical equipment is required for transmission. The risk of infection is minimised when proper infection prevention and control precautions are strictly followed. There is no approved treatment or vaccine for MVD; however, several pharmaceuticals and candidate MVD vaccines are under investigation. more
The main objective of this guidance is to provide scientific advice on public health principles and considerations for infection and prevention control of... COVID-19 in migrant and refugee reception and detention centres in the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) and the United Kingdom (UK). more
This document offers public health guidance for the prevention and control of COVID-19 in reception centres, and other temporary accommodation facilities, in ... context of the mass influx of Ukrainian people into the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Republic of Moldova. more
8 March 2022 A very large number of people from Ukraine are fleeing the country and entering the Europ... Union (EU) countries bordering Ukraine (Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia) and the EU-neighbourhood country of the Republic of Moldova.
