The Global Reference List of 100 Core Health Indicators is a standard set of core indicators prioritized by the ... community to provide concise information on the health situation and trends, including responses at national and global levels. This second (2018) edition builds on the previous work of the inter-agency working group that was commissioned by global health leaders to reduce reporting burden. Antimicrobial Resistance (Part 1 and 2). E-Learning Course

Clark, A.; and M.P.Joshi Global Health Elearning Center (2016) CC
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when disease-causing pathogens are able to withstand the killing or suppressing power of antimicrobial medicines. This phenomenon increases the ... burden of infectious diseases and strains health systems. This course aims to improve the learner's awareness and understanding of the basic principles of AMR, the impact AMR has on individuals and society, and why it is a major public health concern. A complementary course, Antimicrobial Resistance (Part 2), describes interventions that address the multiple factors contributing to AMR across the health system. more

The World Heart Federation (WHF) commenced a Roadmap initiative in 2015 to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular ... and resultant burgeoning of healthcare costs. Roadmaps provide a blueprint for implementation of priority solutions for the principal cardiovascular diseases leading to death and disability. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of these conditions and is an increasing problem due to ageing of the world’s population and an increase in cardiovascular risk factors that predispose to AF. The goal of the AF roadmap was to provide guidance on priority interventions that are feasible in multiple countries, and to identify roadblocks and potential strategies to overcome them. more
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a leading cause of death in the African region, surpassing fatalities from malaria, HIV, and TB. In response to this critical threat, the region has adopted the AMR ... Action Plan and the African Union Framework for Antimicrobial Resistance Control 2020 – 2025, which is tailored to meet the specific needs of African nations through a coordinated approach. While most countries in the region have developed and prioritized National Action Plans (NAPs) to tackle AMR, the overall response remains inadequate given the magnitude of the threat, which endangers human, animal, environmental, aquatic, and plant health. Africa bears a significant burden of infectious diseases, accounting for approximately 95% of malaria deaths, 70% of people living with HIV, and 25% of TB deaths globally. In 2019, AMR was linked to approximately 55,000 deaths from HIV, 30,000 from malaria, and 255,000 overall. Major drivers of AMR in the region include the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials in human and food systems, migration, suboptimal vaccination rates, and environmental contamination from hospital and pharmaceutical effluents. Additionally, there is a lack of access to quality-assured antimicrobials and diagnostics, compounded by inadequate knowledge about AMR. Unlike high-income countries, where indiscriminate antimicrobial use is the primary factor driving AMR, African countries face additional challenges, including a lack of access to clean and safe water, poor Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs, inadequate infection prevention measures, and suboptimal vaccinations for preventable diseases. One in three hospitals in the region lacks clean, safe running water, and one in eight people defecate openly due to inadequate sanitation. Investments in WASH, infection prevention, and biosecurity could save approximately 700,000 lives annually. Addressing AMR in Africa requires a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach involving the entire society. Sustainable access to antimicrobials, including antibiotics, vaccines, and therapeutics, is crucial, as lack of access leads to more morbidity and mortality than AMR itself. Support for the region should focus on preventing infections, strengthening health and food systems, developing human resources, ensuring sustainable access to diagnostics and therapeutics, and investing in laboratory infrastructure to support surveillance and data generation. more
As our world changes, so too does the burden of disease. Globalisation, evolving trade and consumption patterns, and increased access to life-savin... more
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), sub-Saharan Africa has only 3% of the world’s health workers to cater for 11% of the world population, bearing over 25% ... the global disease burden (WHO, 2014). With a steady increase in reported cases on the African Continent, the current COVID-19 pandemic threatens to overwhelm our already taxed health infrastructure. It is, therefore, imperative to take serious and urgent measures towards disease management and monitoring especially as the need for self-quarantine and contact surveillance rises. In view of the infrastructural and resource gaps, technology should be considered for remote management of healthcare deliver to patients during this period. As it is abundantly clear, even countries with more advanced healthcare infrastructure and resources have struggled to treat COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients during this pandemic. more

Dengue epidemiology

Jing, Q.; Wang, M. Global Health Journal (2019) CC
Dengue is the fastest spreading, mosquito-borne viral infectious disease worldwide, with remarkable morbidity and mortality. In the past decades, profound contributions have been made towards understanding its epidemiology, including ... burden and distributions, risk factors, and control and prevention practices. Dengue continues to disseminate to new areas, including high latitude regions, and a new serotype (dengue virus serotype 5) has been identified. Vaccine research has made new progress, in which the licensed yellow fever and dengue virus quadrivalent chimeric vaccine is now under further safety assessment. In disease surveillance, because of its operational simplicity, rapidity, capability, and utility as an indicator of disease severity, dengue virus NS1 antigen detection has great promotion and application value among primary health care institutions. Vector control progress has driven new breakthroughs in biotechnology, including Wolbachia-infected Aedes and genetically modified Aedes. Both Aedes variants have been used to block transmission of the dengue virus through population replacement and suppression. In the future, vector control should still be pursued as a key measure to prevent transmission, along with anti-viral drug and vaccine research. more
For the primary health worker in a low/middle-income country (LMIC) setting, delivering quality primary care is challenging. This is often complicated by clinical guidance that is out of date, inconsistent and informed by evidence from high-income c... more

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, a collaborative endeavour ... the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank and the Harvard School of Public Health, drew the attention of the international health community to the burden of neurological disorders and many other chronic conditions. This study found that the burden of neurological disorders was seriously underestimated by traditional epidemiological and health statistical methods that take into account only mortality rates but not disability rates. The GBD study showed that over the years the global health impact of neurological disorders had been underestimated. more
In the WHO South-East Asia Region, epidemiological knowledge of mental health conditions remains a relative unknown, given the sparsity of data and information on (a) the total ... associated with each disorder; (b) the degree of met and unmet needs for treatment and interventions; and (c) the patterns and costs of treatment. This is a common situation in other regions of the world, where the global descriptive epidemiology of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is mainly used in association with the WHO Global Health Estimates (GHE) to quantify, at the very least, the total burden associated with mental health conditions. more
Mental disorders are a leading cause of the global burden of ..., and the provision of mental health services in developing countries remains very limited and far from equitable. Using the Creditor Reporting System, we estimate the amounts and patterns of development assistance for global mental health (DAMH) between 2007 and 2013. This allows us to examine how well international donors have responded to calls by global mental health advocates to scale up evidence-based services. Although DAMH did increase between 2007 and 2013, it remains low both in absolute terms and as a proportion of total development assistance for health (DAH). The average annual DAMH between 2007 and 2013 was US$133.57 million, and the proportion of DAH attributed to mental health is less than 1%. Approximately 48% of total DAMH was for humanitarian assistance, education, and civil services. More annual DAMH was channelled into the nonpublic sector than the public sector. Despite an expanding body of evidence suggesting that sustainable mental health care can be effectively integrated into existing health systems at relatively low cost, mental health has not received significant development assistance. more
