This document outlines PAHO’s regional priorities for the year 2023 to sustain and scale up health emergency and humanitarian assistance ... the Americas, with a focus on five priority countries currently facing a prolonged humanitarian crisis and recovering from recent acute emergencies: Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of). These goals align with and build on the World Health Organization’s Global Health Emergency Appeal for 2023, its principles, priorities, and strategies. more

Every five minutes a child dies as the result of violence, according to a ground-breaking report from Unicef UK. The report reveals that ... vast majority of children are killed outside warzones and that physical, sexual and emotional abuse is widespread with millions of children unsafe in their homes, schools and communities. Some 345 children could die from violence each day in the next year, unless governments act. The report also finds that: (1) Children who are victims of violence have brain activity similar to soldiers exposed to combat; (2) A third of children who are victims of violence are likely to develop long-lasting symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder; (3) Those living in poverty are more likely to be victims of violence, wherever they live in the world; (4) Over 7% of child deaths due to violence each day are the result of interpersonal violence, rather than conflict. more

By December of 2019, an estimated 5.3 million Venezuelans would have left the country, migrating in search of opportunities, health services and an overall search to improve ... socio-economic conditions of themselves and their families. This is the largest migration in the history of the Americas. Migrants are one of the most vulnerable populations, exposed to human trafficking, abuse, exploitation and violence. This Emergency Appeal seeks funds to reach this vulnerable population through a range of services that are aimed at preserving the dignity of migrant populations and increasing their wellbeing.
