Now entering its ninth year, the crisis in north-east Nigeria has created vulnerabilities and humanitarian concerns. An estimated 7.7 million men, women, boys ... girls are in acute need of protection and assistance. While the humanitarian community has provided life-saving assistance to over 5.6 million affected people in 2017 and helped stabilise living conditions for millions of people, reducing mortality and morbidity, significant humanitarian needs still remain. The Humanitarian Response Plan at a glance: STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 1 Provide life-saving emergency assistance to the most vulnerable people in conflict-affected areas ensuring that assistance is timely and appropriate and meets relevant technical standards. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 2 Ensure that all assistance promotes the protection, safety and dignity of affected people, and is provided equitably to women, girls, men and boys. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 3 Foster resilience and early recovery, and strengthen the humanitarian development nexus by working towards collective outcomes. more

The Strategic Framework for Emergency Preparedness is a unifying framework which identifies the principles and elements of effective country ... emergency preparedness. It adopts the major lessons of previous initiatives and lays out the planning and implementation process by which countries can determine their priorities and develop or strengthen their operational capacities. The framework capitalizes on the strengths of current initiatives and pushes for more integrated action at a time when there is both increased political will and increased funding available to support preparedness efforts. more

North-east Nigeria: Case study

Edwards, Jon Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) (2017)
This case study examines the humanitarian response to the conflict-related crisis in the North-East of Nigeria, focusing primarily on the period from 2015 to the end ... 2016. The aim is test the central hypotheses of the Emergency Gap project: that the current structure, conceptual underpinning and prevalent mindset of the international humanitarian system limits its capacity to be effective in response to conflict-related emergencies.
As with many conflict-related crises, the emergency in north-east Nigeria has deep and complex roots in the history of the region. The conflict began in 2009 and quickly developed beyond the control of the authorities. It unfolded in the midst of pre-existing political, social and economic tensions, making an effective humanitarian response exceedingly difficult. Despite this complexity, what is clear is that the crisis has resulted in a sprawling humanitarian disaster that has killed over 25,000 people as a direct result of the violence, and continues to devastate many more lives through hunger, psychological trauma and lack of access to healthcare. more

Today, more than 2 million people are either blind or suffer from a very painful disability as the result of trachoma. more
