The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified mental health as an integral component of ... COVID-19 response. Its rapid assessment of service delivery for mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic, on which this report is based, is the first attempt to measure the impact of the pandemic on such services at a global level. The data were collected through a web-based survey completed by mental health focal points at ministries of health between June and August 2020. The questionnaire covered the existence and funding of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) plans, the presence and composition of MHPSS coordination platforms, the degree of continuation and causes of disruption of different MNS services, the approaches used to overcome these disruptions, and surveillance mechanisms and research on MNS data. more

Report by the Director-General. 75th World health assembly 25 April 2022
This manual is a resource for Health Counselors working in Family Physician Clinics (FPC) as part of the MANAS program. This program is for common ... disorders like depression and anxiety seen in primary health care facilitieslike the FPC; since depression is the commonest disorder within this group of stress related mental health problems, in the manual we refer to these problems simply as ‘Depression’. The aim of the MANAS program is to integrate the recognition and treatment of Depression into routine primary health care.In the MANAS program, a range of effective treatments will be provided for patients with Depression. These treatments are matched to the individual requirements of patients to both improve the effectiveness of the treatments and to use the limited resources efficiently. more

Mental Health in Haiti: Beyond Disaster Relief

Olivia Tiberi The Journal of Global Health (2016) C1
Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world, was devastated by an earthquake in 2010. The disaster uncovered ... realities of a non-existent mental health care system with only ten psychiatrists nationwide. Attempts were made to assess the increased prevalence of mental illness, likely due to the trauma to which many were exposed. Several interventions were carried out with aims to integrate mental health into primary health care services. The interplay between socio-cultural beliefs and health (both mental and physical) in Haiti has been widely commented upon by both foreign aid and local caregivers. Observations frequently highlight barriers to the willingness of patients to seek care and to their acceptance of biomedicine over traditional Vodou beliefs. The perception of Haitian beliefs as barriers to the availability and acceptance of mental health care has intensified the difficulty in providing effective recommendations and interventions both before and after the earthquake. Argued in this review is the importance of considering the interactions between socio-cultural beliefs and mental health when developing models for the prevention, screening, classification and management of mental illness in Haiti. These interactions, especially relevant in mental health care and post-disaster contexts, need to be acknowledged in any healthcare setting. The successes and failures of Haiti’s situation provide an example for global consideration. more
Adolescence, defined as the period between 10 and 19 years of age, is a developmental stage during which many psychosocial ... mental health challenges emerge. There is a well-established link between mental health and HIV outcomes. Adolescents and young adults living with HIV typically have additional mental health needs linked to their experiences of living with and managing a chronic illness, along with prevailing stigma and discrimination. Mental health promotion and prevention is thus a critical priority for this group. more

The WHO health advisory provides guidance to countries on adapting all existing preparedness and response plans ... procedures for natural hazards such as cyclones, tropical storms, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and potential outbreaks of other diseases to their existing COVID-19 strategic preparedness and response plans. It advises countries to sustain all established public health and social measures to prevent and control COVID-19 while simultaneously preparing for responding to and effectively manage other disaster risks and events. It highlights WHO’s call for local, national, regional and global solidarity to support countries and communities with high levels of vulnerability to natural hazards during the COVID-19 pandemic. more

Building Capacity for Disability Inclusion in Gender-based Violence (GBV) Programming in Humanitarian Settings

Women and girls with mental and intellectual disabilities were perceived to be most at risk of sexual violence, ... family and service providers may only become aware of sexual violence against them when they become pregnant. Discrimination by GBV service providers, family and community members was the most common barrier to access. Inadequate transportation and inappropriate communication approaches were also common impediments. On this website you can download the report in different languages, more

For applying the new operational guidance on CB-MHPSS in the field, UNICEF country offices and partners will need ready access to tools ... resources that can be used to implement the programs. By bringing together resources from different contexts, the compendium makes options available to country offices and partners for programming.
