Educating students with disabilities in an inclusive general education setting has been shown to increase academic achievement, increase peer acceptance, increase self esteem, create a richer friendship network, and have positive li...fetime benefits (higher salaried jobs, independent living). In addition, inclusion can have benefits for students without disabilities. The West African nation of Senegal has pledged to increase inclusive education for students with disabilities by 2015. Issues that affect inclusive education for all in Senegal are access to schooling, community and societal perceptions of individuals with disabilities, poverty, and teacher training and pedagogy. To increase inclusive education for all in Senegal the country must increase access to schooling through physical accessibility and decentralization, create community awareness campaigns that increase knowledge of disabilities, and develop teacher training that fosters a student-centered pedagogy.

There are three sections in this e-learning module on radiation emergencies: Section One is an introduction about the basics of radiation. For instance, the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and the different ways to measure radiation. Section Two is about the health effects of ...acute exposure to radiation. For instance, the mechanisms by which ionizing radiation damages our cells and the clinical manifestations of acute exposure are introduced. Section Three discusses the measures in response to a radiation emergency. For instance, the principles of emergency department preparedness, the use of personal protective equipment and the procedures to decontamination are presented. Although this module is primarily for first responders to prepare for radiation emergencies, it is also suitable for the general public who are interested in knowing more about this topic. Healthcare professionals may also find this module useful in case they want to refresh their knowledge on radiation.

Injury to the skin and underlying tissues from acute exposure to
a large external dose of radiation is referred to as cutaneous
radiation injury (CRI). Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) 1 will
usually be accompanied by some skin damage; however, CRI
can ...occur without symptoms of ARS. This is especially true with
acute exposures to beta radiation or low-energy x-rays, because
beta radiation and low-energy x-rays are less penetrating and less
likely to damage internal organs than gamma radiation is. CRI can
occur with radiation doses as low as 2 Gray (Gy) or 200 rads 2 and
the severity of CRI symptoms will increase with increasing doses.
Most cases of CRI have occurred when people inadvertently came
in contact with unsecured radiation sources from food irradiators,
radiotherapy equipment, or well depth gauges. In addition, cases of
CRI have occurred in people who were overexposed to x-radiation
from fluoroscopy units.
