The purpose of this strategy is to guide the planning, management and development of human resou...rces for health in Rwanda for the period 2011 - 2016. The overall aim ofthe plan is to increase the number of appropriately skilled, motivated and equitably distributed health service providers for Rwanda.more
The number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise again, with South Africa nearing half of all confirm...ed cases in the WHO African Region. Threats of new variants loom and low vaccination coverage raises questions on the future ofthe response to COVID-19. Prevention remains the key strategy in most sub-Saharan countries. Five National Centres (NCs) from the African Health Observatory Platform on Health Systems and Policies (AHOP), based in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Senegal, reflect on lessons to be learnt from their containment responses in the initial phases. They construct timelines to highlight the policies and challenges associated with introducing a range of public health containment measures and
discuss the extent to which these measures continue to be valuable given the ever-changing nature ofthe pandemic.more
The Kenyan Health Sector has been playing a critical role in
providing health care services in response to the population

Diarrhea is one ofthe world’s leading causes of child illness and death, and rotavirus is the... most common cause of severe diarrhea. Yet it can be prevented and treated. There is a vaccine. And while hundreds of thousands of children in India will gain access to rotavirus vaccines -part of a national introduction marking Asia’s largest so far -millions of children globally still lack access. This new report from the Rota Council summarizes the latest evidence on rotavirus disease and vaccines and identifies 21 recommendations for stakeholders to scale up coverage and prevent hundreds of thousands of child deaths annually.more
The Rwandan Ministry of Health recognizes the threat that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) pose to health and development in Rwanda and in 2009 art...iculates strategies to respond to them in the Health Sector Strategic Plan 2012 - 2018 (HSSP3). Among other things, the plan calls for a national prevalence survey on NCD risk factors. This report responds to that call and summarizes the findings ofthe first NCD risk factor survey in Rwanda conducted from November 2012 to March 2013. more
The study on refugee economies shows that refugees and former refugees are contributing positively to Zambia’s economy in various ways and have the potential to contribute even further if legal an...d other obstacles are removed.
The study targeted mainly Congolese, Burundian, Somali, and Rwandan refugees as well as former refugees from Rwanda and Angola in urban areas and the two rural refugee settlements, Mayukwayukwa (Kaoma District/Western Province) and Meheba (Kaulumbila District/North-Western Province).more
During the implementation ofthe National Strategic Plan 2009–2012 on HIV and AIDS, Rwanda has continued its progress towards universal access to... HIV and AIDS services. The new HIV and AIDS National Strategic Plan July 2013–June 2018 (thereafter referred to as ‘the NSP’) presented here is set on pursuing the same objective, with inspiration from the global targets of “zero new HIV infections, zero HIV-related deaths and zero stigma and discrimination due to HIV”. more
This volume presents the complex patterns of cancer incidence and death around the world and evidence on effective and cost-effective ways to contr...ol cancers. The Disease Control Priorities Volume 3 evaluation of cancer will indicate where cancer treatment is ineffective and wasteful, and offer alternative cancer care packages that are cost-effective and suited to low-resource settings.

Mental health problems represent the greatest global burden of disease among children and adolescents. There is, however, lack of policy developmen...t and implementation for child and adolescent mental health (CAMH), particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where children and adolescents represent up to 50% of populations. South Africa, an upper-middle income country is often regarded as advanced in health and social policy-making and implementation in comparison to other LMICs. It is, however, not clear whether this is the case for CAMH.more
This report situates disability and inclusion within the broader context of sustainable development, with a particular focus on the Sustainable Dev...elopment Goals (SDGs). The paper provides background on the historical role ofthe UN in promoting inclusion and outlines the current trends and challenges facing people with disabilities globally. The following section presents these challenges within the context ofthe SDGs, showing that disability needs to be tackled if the SDGs are to be achieved. It concludes with a number of recommendations for a disability-inclusive 2030 agenda for sustainable development

For the Fiscal Year 2014-2015, the Health Sector continued to implement interventions and strategies meant to improve the availability, accessibili...ty and utilization of quality healthcare services across public and private health facilities; and to ensure the reduction ofthe burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Rwanda. This annual report highlights key achievements registered by the health sector during the Fiscal Year 2014-2015. Achievements are highlighted under three big components: Health Programs, Health Systems Support and Budget Execution. more
Bonchial asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease in the world. In Kenya, it has been estimated that about 7.5% of...ute-to-highlight medbox">the Kenyan population, nearly 4 million people, are currently living with asthma. Many cases tend to be underdiagnosed and undertreated which leads to high levels of morbidity and avoidable deaths. The consequences of poorly controlled asthma, including physical, mental, social, and economic impacts, are magnified in the poor on account of poor access to asthma services and sub-optimal quality of those services. With these guidelines, Kenya's Ministry of Health aims to work towards embedding asthma care in Universal Health Care (UHC) to ensure that quality asthma services are available in primary care settings with
referral networks strengthened for those who may require secondary and tertiary care. These national asthma guidelines will also ensure that treatment for asthma is standardized in both the public and the non-state health care sector.

Disabled people in developing countries are the poorest ofthe poor: if we are serious about tackling extreme poverty, our development work has to ...target them. The post-2015 development framework offers hope that disabled people will finally get the prominence they deserve on the global development agenda. But this will only be possible with sustained political pressure, and the UK’s position will only be credible if it leads by example in its own development work. Disabled people experience some ofthe most extreme poverty in the world, but there are also realistic opportunities for donors to turn the situation around.more

year proposed strategies for eye care in Kenya. It sets the strategic
dir...ection for the National Eye Health Care System and presents
information on the priorities, objectives and indicators that the
Ministry has adopted especially with regard to the main eye diseases

The GHS Index is intended to be a key resource in the face of increasing risks of high-consequen...ce and globally catastrophic biological events and in light of major gaps in international financing for preparedness. These risks are magnified by a rapidly changing and interconnected world; increasing political instability; urbanization; climate change; and rapid technology advances that make it easier, cheaper, and faster to create and engineer pathogens.
Key findings from the study of 195 countries:
• Out of a possible 100 points, the average GHS Index score across 195 countries was 40.2.
• The majority of high- and middle-income countries do not score above 50.
• Action is urgently needed to improve countries’ readiness for high-consequence infectious disease outbreaks.

Drawing on lessons from recent outbreaks, this new edition details tangible measures for frontline health workers to protect access to family planning services during emergencies, such as wider access to self-administered contraceptives and the use of digital technologies by providers.
