Census Report Volume 4-F (Thematic report on Population Projections for the Union of Myanmar, States/Regions, Rural and Urban Areas, 2014-2050)
Key findings
- The total population ... Myanmar is estimated to be 65 million by 2050. The projection is based on steadily declining population growth rate over the projection period: from 0.9 per cent in 2015 to 0.3 per cent in 2050.
- The proportion of the urban population rises from 29.3 per cent in 2015 to 34.7 in 2050. The rural and urban crude birth rates both decline between 2015 and 2050, but the difference between them narrows to almost zero by the end of the period.
- The population of Yangon grows more rapidly than any other area, by 39 per cent between 2015 and 2031. Other rapidly growing areas include Kayah (37 per cent), Kachin (32 per cent), Nay Pyi Taw (27 per cent), and Shan (26 per cent). Ayeyawady, Magway and Mon lose population, mostly due to migration. more

The report provides the much-needed evidence to design interventions for children in Kenya and as such we urge partners to use this report as a document for planning for children.

The use of explosive weapons, such as bombs, rockets, and mortar and artillery shells, in cities, towns ... villages and in other populated areas has devastating humanitarian consequences. Explosive weapons act mainly through the projection of blast and fragmentation within an area. Their use, in populated areas, causes severe suffering to civilians, both in terms of death and serious injury resulting directly from the explosion, and in terms of damage to property and public infrastructure, which can indirectly affect civilian well-being and survival, sometimes for many years after a conflict has ended. Explosive weapons also leave behind explosive remnants that pose a threat to populations until those remnants are removed. [...] The study finds that the regulation of explosive weapons under international law and policy is fragmentary and incoherent. more
Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including mental disorders, currently pose one of the biggest threats to health and development globally, particularly in low ... middle income countries2. It is predicted that unless proven interventions are rapidly implemented in countries, in the short to medium term, health care costs will increase exponentially and severe negative consequences will ensue not only to individuals and families but to whole societies and economies. NCDs are already a major burden in South Africa, but without added rigorous and timely action the health and development consequences may well become catastrophic. Immediate and additional, high quality, evidence based and focussed interventions are needed to promote health, prevent disease and provide more effective and equitable care and treatment for people living with NCDs at all levels of the health system. The problem is further compounded by the rising global prevalence of multi-morbidity (defined as the coexistence of two or more chronic diseases in one individual). more

Occupational health and safety programmes aim to prevent diseases and injuries arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course ... work, while improving the quality and safety of care, safeguarding the health workforce and promoting environmental sustainability in the health sector. This guide provides an overview of the key elements of occupational health and safety programmes for health workers at national, subnational and facility levels, as well as advice for the development and implementation of such programmes. Health workers exposure risk assessment and management in the context of COVID-19 virus more
Conflicts and disasters, including pandemics, affect women and men in all their diversity differently, and women ... girls often suffer the most. Crisis-related hardships combine and compound pre-existing disadvantages, for example, they often cause women’s working conditions to worsen while increasing their overall workload and care responsibilities. At the same time, crises can give rise to changes that enable women to take up roles that were previously available only to men, and crises can open opportunities to address existing gender-based discrimination and violations of rights. more
