La République Démocratique du Congo connait une fragilité sociale issue de divers conflits communautaires qui ont déstabilisés le tissu économique du pays sans épargner le secteur éducatif depuis plusieurs années. Les sources de fragilité sont aussi liées à la pauvreté de la population ...et à l’insécurité alimentaire (15,5 millions de personnes en 2019). Le nombre de cas de COVID-19 augmente à nouveau, l’Afrique du Sud comptant pour près de la moitié de tous les cas confirmés de la Région africaine de l’OMS. La menace de nouveaux variants plane, et la faible couverture vaccinale soulève des questions concernant les mesures qui devront êtr...e prises pour lutter contre la COVID-19. Dans la plupart des pays d’Afrique subsaharienne, la prévention reste la stratégie clé. Dans ce document, cinq centres nationaux de la plateforme de l’Observatoire africain de la santé sur les systèmes et politiques de santé (AHOP), basés en Éthiopie, au Kenya, au Nigéria, au Rwanda et au Sénégal analysent les leçons à tirer de leurs mesures d’endiguement respectives lors despremières phases de la pandémie.

MEDBOX Issue Brief 27: ces derniers temps, un nombre dramatique de cas de choléra a été enregistré dans le monde entier. Selon l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, 29 pays ont déjà signalé la présence de choléra cette année (2022).
La Syrie, le Malawi et Haïti sont actuellement aux pris...es avec des épidémies particulièrement importantes.
Le 2 octobre 2022, les autorités nationales haïtiennes ont signalé les deux premiers cas confirmés de Vibrio cholerae O1 dans l'agglomération de Port-au-Prince. Dans la prison de Port-au-Prince, il y a une épidémie de choléra qui a identifié 271 cas suspects à ce jour, dont 12 cas confirmés et 14 décès.
Il convient de noter que cette épidémie survient dans un contexte de crise humanitaire et sécuritaire complexe à Port-au-Prince et dans les villes voisines, où l'accès aux services de santé et, par conséquent, la surveillance épidémiologique pourraient être affectés.

Leishmaniose cutanée : un important problèmede santé
La leishmaniose cutanée est une maladie potentiellement grave et défigurante. Les personnes atteintes de leishmaniose cutanée ont une ou plusieurs lésions durables sur la peau, le plus souvent sans fièvre ni symptômes généraux. L'impac...t de la leishmaniose cutanée sur la propagation de la pauvreté est important, car le traitement est coûteux et donc inabordable ou implique une grande perte d’argent.
Le coût du traitement et de la mise en œuvre de stratégies de prévention nécessite un investissement considérable de ressources financières et humaines. La leishmaniose cutanée est un problème de santé publique majeur dans la Région de l'OMS pour la Méditerranée orientale. Des nouveaux cas apparaissent dans des zones précédemment indemnes de la maladie. Plus de 100 000 nouveaux cas de leishmaniose cutanée sont notifiés chaque année à l'OMS par les pays de la Région, mais les estimations relatives à l'incidence réelle sont de trois à cinq fois plus élevées car de nombreux patients ne consultent jamais un médecin ou un professionnel de santé et les cas ayant reçu un diagnostic de leishmaniose cutanée ne sont pas toujours notifiés aux autorités sanitaires.

Un comité OMS d’experts sur la trypanosomiase humaine africaine (THA) : lutte et surveillance, s’est réuni à Genève (Suisse), du 22 au 26 avril 2013. Le Dr H. Nakatani, sous-directeur général pour le VIH/SIDA, la tuberculose, le paludisme et les maladies tropicales négligées, a ouvert la... réunion au nom du Dr M. Chan, directeur-général de l’OMS.
La THA est une maladie qui afflige les populations rurales de l’Afrique, là où prolifère la mouche tsé-tsé (ou glossine), vecteur des trypanosomes qui en sont la cause. On distingue deux formes de THA : la forme à T. b. gambiense ou forme gambienne, endémique en Afrique de l’Ouest et en Afrique centrale et qui
représente actuellement 95 % des cas, et la forme à T. b. rhodesiense ou forme rhodésienne, endémique en Afrique de l’Est et en Afrique australe, à laquelle sont dus les 5 % restants.
