Almost half (46%) of the world’s 1.7 million children living with HIV were not on treatment in 2020 and 150 000 children were newly infected with HIV, four times more than the 2020 target ... 40 000 more
Every five minutes a child dies as the result of violence, according to a ground-breaking report from Unicef UK. The report reveals that the vast majority of children are killed outside warzones ... that physical, sexual and emotional abuse is widespread with millions of children unsafe in their homes, schools and communities. Some 345 children could die from violence each day in the next year, unless governments act. The report also finds that: (1) Children who are victims of violence have brain activity similar to soldiers exposed to combat; (2) A third of children who are victims of violence are likely to develop long-lasting symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder; (3) Those living in poverty are more likely to be victims of violence, wherever they live in the world; (4) Over 7% of child deaths due to violence each day are the result of interpersonal violence, rather than conflict. more

Background paper for the Oslo Summit on Education for Development. This paper covers the four topics of the Oslo Summit: investment in education, quality of learning, education in emergencies ... girls’ education. Disability continues to be one of the primary causes of educational disadvantage and exclusion, creating the largest single group of girls and boys who remain out of school. Even in those countries close to achieving universal primary enrolment, children with disabilities are still not in school, accessing opportunities to meaningful employment and on sustainable routes out of poverty more
The discourse on climate change and migration has shifted from labelling migration merely as a consequence of climate impacts, to describing it as a form ... human adaptation. This article explores the adaptation framing of the climate change and migration nexus and highlights its shortcomings and advantages. While for some groups, under certain circumstances migration can be an effective form of adaptation, for others it leads to increased vulnerabilities and a poverty spiral, reducing their adaptive apacities. Non-economic losses connected to a change of place further challenge the notion of successful adaptation. Even when migration improves the situation of a household, it may conceal the lack of action on climate change adaptation from national governments or the international community. Given the growing body of evidence on the diverse circumstances and outcomes of migration in the context of climate change, we distinguish between reactive and proactive migration and argue for a precise differentiation in the academic debate more

A human rights-based approach to disability in development - Entry points for development organisations

Ilse Worm Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) & Christoffel-Blindenmission (CBM) (2012) C2
This study has been produced jointly by Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, a federally owned enterprise, implementing development programmes on behalf of the German Government, and... CBM, a non-governmental organisation. Accordingly, its aim is to offer guidance to those in both governmental and non-governmental organisations on development cooperation. Given the wide and differing range of implementation procedures, levels of intervention and organisational cultures, it is not a ready-to-be-applied toolbox with concrete blueprints for action. Rather, it raises awareness on core human rights and disability – inclusive principles. It explains and illustrates the implications of applying these principles to development practice. Practitioners can therefore use the guidance to initiate a process of consideration of how to embed these principles within their programmes. more
