Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. Suicide is a global phenomenon and occurs throughout the lifespan. Effective and evidence-based interventions can be implemented at population, sub-population and individual levels to prevent suicide and sui...cide attempts. There are indications that for each adult who died by suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.

In 2017 Hurricane Maria devastated the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. “After Maria” is based on a one-year ethnographic research project about how 16 low-income Puerto Rican families were affected by, and recovered from the impacts of Maria. Dr. Gemma Sou visited Puerto Rico five times during ...the first year after Maria, to chat candidly about how the families were recovering. Although this graphic novella tells the story of a fictional family, “After Maria” is based on the experiences that tie together all of the Puerto Rican families that I spoke to.

Jointly publis...hed by WHO, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the report reviews the current status of violence prevention efforts in countries, and calls for a scaling up of violence prevention programmes; stronger legislation and enforcement of laws relevant for violence prevention; and enhanced services for victims of violence.

The partograph is a graphic record of vital observations during the course of labo...ur in order to assess its progress and carry out appropriate interventions if and when necessary. Correct use of the partograph can help prevent and manage prolonged or obstructed labour and serious complications, including ruptured uterus, obstetric fistula, and stillbirth. The partograph was developed in Africa (Zimbabwe in about 1970) and has become adopted worldwide.

The IMAT guides the user through a process of collecting data on the physical and theoretical stock balance and the duration of stockouts for a set of up to 25 frequently-used products, calcula...ting indicators, analyzing the results, and identifying strategies for improving record-keeping and stock management practices. The IMAT comes as a computerized spreadsheet in Excel and includes instructions, a data collection form, analysis guidelines, recommendations, and a graphical display of the indicator results.

Accessing disaster information can be a time consuming and laborious task. Not only is data scattered but frequently identification of the disaster can be confusing in countries with many disaster events. To address both of these issues, Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) proposed a globally com...mon Unique ID code for disasters. This idea was shared and promoted by the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) of the University of Louvain in Brussels (Belgium), OCHA/ReliefWeb, OCHA/FSCC, ISDR, UNDP, WMO, IFRC, OFDA-USAID, FAO, La Red and the World Bank and was jointly launched as a new initiative "GLIDE".
The GLIDE database is easily searchable by many criteria. Information in the GLIDE database may be presented in many forms, including tabular and graphic forms.

This document adopts a health determinants framework for examining the evidence related to women’s poor mental health. From this perspective, public policy including economic policy, socio-cultural and environmental factors, community and social support, stressors and life events, personal behavio...ur and skills, and availability and access to health services, are all seen to exercise a role in determining women’s mental health status. Similarly, when considering the differences between women and men, a gender approach has been used. While this does not exclude biological or sex differences, it considers the critical roles that social and cultural factors and unequal power relations between men and women play in promoting or impeding mental health. Such inequalities create, maintain and exacerbate exposure to risk factors that endanger women’s mental health, and are most graphically illustrated in the significantly different rates of depression between men and women, poverty and its impact, and the phenomenal prevalence of violence against women.
