Anyone who manages, works, volunteers or provides care at any type of facilities where older people recei...ve care at (long-term care facilities, non-acute care facilities, and home care services), should practice strict IPC to prevent and control COVID-19 outbreaks. It has been observed in different countries that older people have higher case-fatality rate compared to other age groups. Therefore, it is especially important to implement and follow IPC measures at facilities, homes, and other venues that older people frequent.

Os sistemas de saúde estão enfrentando um rápido aumento na demanda gerada pelo surto da COVID-19. Quando os sistemas de saúde ficam sobrecarregados, há um aumento drástico na mortalidade direta causada por um surto e também na mortalidade indireta por doenças imunopreveníveis e por aquelas... doenças que possuem tratamento. Análises do surto de ebola em 2014-2015 sugerem que o aumento no número de óbitos causados por sarampo, malária, HIV/AIDS e tuberculose atribuíveis a falhas no sistema de saúde ultrapassou o número de óbitos causados pelo ebola. A capacidade de um sistema de manter a prestação de serviços essenciais de saúde dependerá de sua capacidade inicial e da carga da doença e do contexto de transmissão do vírus COVID-19 (classificado como nenhum caso, transmissão esporádica, em clusters ou comunitária). Manter a confiança da população na capacidade do sistema de saúde de atender, com segurança, as necessidades essenciais e de controlar o risco de infecção nas unidades de saúde é fundamental para garantir que as pessoas continuem a buscar atendimento quando necessário e que sigam as orientações de saúde pública.

Alé...m disso, a maioria dos pacientes críticos com COVID-19 precisará de ventilação mecânica.2,3 Por esses motivos, as unidades de saúde que tratam da COVID-19 devem estar equipadas com oxímetros de pulso, sistemas de oxigênio em funcionamento, incluindo interfaces de administração de oxigênio de uso único. A oxigenoterapia é recomendada para todos os pacientes graves e críticos com COVID-19, em doses baixas, variando de 1-2 L/min em crianças e começando com 5 L/min em adultos com cânula nasal, fluxos moderados para o uso em máscara de Venturi (6-10 L/min); ou fluxos mais altos (10-15 L/min) com o uso de uma máscara com bolsa reservatório. Além disso, o oxigênio pode ser administrado em fluxos mais altos e em concentrações maiores, usando uma cânula nasal de alto fluxo (CNAF)
