Coronavirus and HIV. The impact of the new coronavirus pandemic on people with HIV, sexual health and HIV services. The new virus is called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) while the illness it causes is coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
• PrEP is highly effective in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV.
• For PrEP to work well, it’s important to take the pills regularly.
• While PrEP can prevent HIV, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.
This briefing paper provides an overview of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for people planning, commissioning or providing HIV prevention activities in the UK. It does this by reviewing thirty key questions about PrEP and how it might be implemented in the UK.
